It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the owners of fields used to lease out their fields, and it was agreed that the produce that grew over the water channels or that which was reached by water naturally would belong to them. This matter reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and there was also some dispute among people regarding it. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade leasing land in this manner, and said: “Lease out land for gold and silver.”
