It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, people from the tribe of Juhainah came to him and said, “You have come and settled among us, so please write us a document so that when we come to you, we may have assurance with you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had a document written for them. Later, those people became Muslims. Some time later, in the month of Rajab, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent us out; our number was not even a hundred, and he ordered us to attack a tribe of Banu Kinanah that was settled beside the tribe of Juhainah. We launched a night raid on them, but their numbers were very large, so we took refuge among the tribe of Juhainah, but they refused to give us shelter and said, “Why are you fighting in the sacred months?” We replied, “We are fighting those who expelled us from the sacred land to the sacred city, thus violating its sanctity.” Then we began to consult among ourselves about what should be done. Some people said, “Let us go to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and inform him of the whole situation.” Others said, “No, we will stay here.” My opinion, along with a few others, was that we should go towards the caravan of Quraysh and attack them. So the people set out towards the caravan. At that time, the rule regarding spoils of war was that whatever came into someone’s hands belonged to him. Some of us went and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about this as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up in anger, and the color of his blessed face turned red, and he said, “You all left from me together, and now you are returning separately. It was this very division that destroyed those before you. I will appoint over you a man as your leader who, although he is not better than you, is stronger than you in enduring hunger and thirst.” Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jahsh Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) as the leader, who was the first leader in Islam.
