Shuraih bin Ubaid and others say that when Sayyiduna Iyad bin Ghanm conquered the city of Dar, he flogged its governor. Upon this, Sayyiduna Hisham bin Hakeem spoke harsh words to him until Iyad became displeased with him. After some days had passed, Hisham came to him again, apologized, and said: "Did you not hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that on the Day of Resurrection, the person who will receive the severest punishment will be the one who inflicted the severest punishment on people in the world?" Upon this, Sayyiduna Iyad said: "Hisham, just as you heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so did we; just as you saw, so did we. But did you not hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that whoever wishes to advise a ruler about any matter should not do so publicly, but should take his hand and speak to him in private? If the ruler accepts the advice, that is good; otherwise, he has fulfilled his responsibility. And O Hisham, you are a very bold man; you even show boldness before a king appointed by Allah. Do you not fear that the king might kill you and you become the slain of Allah's king?"
