Umar bin Sa’d says that once I needed something from my father, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him). Before stating his purpose, he gave a long and elaborate introduction, as is the habit of people. When he finished, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Son! Have you finished your talk? I replied: Yes! He said: You are not very far from your need (I will fulfill your need), but ever since I heard this from you, I have lost interest in you. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Soon there will come a people who will eat by the power of their tongues (eloquence), just as a cow eats from the earth with its tongue.”
