It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were digging the trench with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I had a six-month-old goat. I thought to myself, why not roast it and arrange food for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? So I told my wife, and she had some barley, from which she baked bread, and we slaughtered the goat and roasted it for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When evening came and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to return from the trench—as we used to work all day and return home in the evening—I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have roasted a little meat that we had, and with it, some barley bread has been baked. I wish that you would come with me to my house. My intention was that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come alone with me, but when I invited the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to come, he said: Very well, and ordered a caller, who announced throughout the army that everyone should go to the house of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In my heart, I recited: "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and all the people came and sat down. We brought whatever we had cooked and placed it before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for blessing in it and, saying "Bismillah," began to eat from it. People kept coming and eating until all the people of the trench had eaten their fill of that food.
