Hadith 14964

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وُلِدَ لَهُ غُلَامٌ ، فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يُسَمِّيَهُ مُحَمَّدًا ، فَكَأَنَّهُمْ كَرِهُوهُ ، فَحَمَلَهُ عَلَى عَاتِقِهِ ، فَأَتَى بِهِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " تَسَمَّوْا بِاسْمِي ، وَلَا تَكَنَّوْا بِكُنْيَتِي " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a child was born to an Ansari. He wanted to name him Muhammad. We said to him, "We will not allow you to do this until we ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So he placed his son on his shoulder and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and inquired. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You may name him with my name, but do not use my kunyah for your kunyah."
