Hadith 1485

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he became ill in Makkah Mukarramah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to visit him. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I have a lot of wealth, and my only heir is one daughter. Can I bequeath all my wealth in the way of Allah? He said: “No.” I asked about half, and he still forbade me. Then when I asked about a third of my wealth, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Yes! You may bequeath a third, and a third is still a lot.”
