Hadith 1482

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he became ill in Makkah Mukarramah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to visit him. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Can I bequeath all my wealth in the way of Allah? He said, “No.” I asked about half, and he still forbade it. Then when I asked about a third of my wealth, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Yes! You may bequeath a third, and a third is still a lot. Remember! If you leave your family in a good state, it is much better than leaving them in such a condition that they are forced to beg from people. Whatever you spend on yourself is charity, whatever you spend on your family is charity, and whatever you spend on your wife is also charity.” The narrator also says that at that time Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) had only one daughter. Then Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned migration, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “May Allah have mercy on Ibn Afra. It may be that Allah will raise you to such a high status that a people will benefit from you and others will be harmed.”
