It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to enter his house. At that time, some women of the Quraysh (the noble wives, may Allah be pleased with them) were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), talking. They were asking the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for an increase (in sustenance), and their voices were raised. But when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission to enter, all of them quickly adjusted their veils. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them permission to enter. When he entered, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was smiling. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! May Allah always keep you smiling and happy like this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I am amazed at these women who were sitting with me just now, but as soon as they heard your voice, they quickly observed veiling.” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! You are more deserving that they should fear you. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O enemies of your own souls! You fear me but do not fear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? They said: Yes! Because you are harsher and sterner than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “By Him in Whose hand is my soul! Whenever Satan sees you walking on a path, he leaves that path and takes another.”
