It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah Mukarramah for ten years, and during the markets of ‘Ukaz, Majannah, and the season of Hajj, he would go to the people in the plain of Mina at their dwellings and meet them, and he would say: “Who will give me shelter? Who will help me so that I may convey the message of my Lord, and he will receive Paradise?” Sometimes a man would come from Yemen or Egypt, and the people of his tribe would come to him and say: “Beware of this young man of Quraysh, lest he lead you astray.” When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pass by their tents, they would point at him with their fingers, until Allah raised us up for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from Yathrib, and we gave him shelter and affirmed him. Thus, one of us would go out, believe in the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would teach him the Qur’an. When he returned home, by the blessing of his Islam, his family would also become Muslim, until there was no house of the Ansar left in which there was not a group of Muslims. All these people would openly declare Islam. One day, all the people gathered for consultation and said: “How long will we leave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this state, that he is being driven in the mountains of Makkah and lives in fear?” So, seventy of us set out towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and reached him during the days of Hajj. We agreed among ourselves to meet in a valley, and we gathered with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one by one or two by two, until when we were all present, we said: “O Messenger of Allah! On what condition should we pledge allegiance to you?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You pledge allegiance to me on the condition that you will listen and obey in activity and inactivity, in hardship and ease, and spend in all circumstances, and enjoin good and forbid evil, and that you will not fear the blame of any blamer in speaking the truth, and that you will help me and protect me as you protect your wives and children, and in return, you will have Paradise.” So we stood up and pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna As‘ad bin Zurara, who was the youngest, took the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “O people of Yathrib, wait! We have come here, striking the livers of our camels, so that we may be certain that he is the Messenger of Allah. Know that taking the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) away from here means enmity with the whole of Arabia, the killing of your best men, and the striking of swords. If you can be patient upon this, then your reward is with Allah. But if you fear any cowardice in yourselves, then make it clear, so that it may be an excuse for you before Allah.” Upon this, all the Ansar said: “As‘ad, move aside! By Allah, we will never leave this pledge nor ever break it.” Thus, we pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this manner, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pledge from us on the promise and conditions of being granted Paradise.
