It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: There are three types of martyrs. The Muslim man whose faith is strong, who faces the enemy, and fulfills the word of Allah until he is martyred—he is the one whom people will look up to on the Day of Resurrection, raising their necks to see him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself raised his head to demonstrate this, until his cap fell off. The Muslim man whose faith is strong, who faces the enemy, and it feels as if thorns have been pricked into his body, then suddenly an arrow comes from somewhere and he is martyred—he will be in the second rank. The Muslim man whose faith is strong, but he has done both good and bad deeds, and when he faces the enemy, he fulfills the word of Allah until he is martyred—he will be in the third rank.
