Abu Uthman says that when the issue of Ziyad’s lineage became very prominent, one day I met Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked him, “What have you people done?” I heard Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) saying that my own ears heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Whoever, in the state of Islam, ascribes himself to someone other than his father, while he knows that he is not his father, Paradise is forbidden for him.” Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I also heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying this.”
