(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ ، وَمُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ : " أَيَّ حِينٍ تُوتِرُ ؟ " قَالَ : أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ بَعْدَ الْعَتَمَةِ ، قَالَ : " فَأَنْتَ يَا عُمَرُ " ، قَالَ : آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، فَأَخَذْتَ بِالْوُثْقَى ، وَأَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا عُمَرُ ، فَأَخَذْتَ بِالْقُوَّةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq when he performed the Witr prayer. He replied: After the Isha prayer, in the first part of the night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the same question to Sayyiduna Umar, and he replied: In the last part of the night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Abu Bakr, you have preferred the aspect in which there is certainty, and Umar, you have preferred the aspect in which there is strength.
