It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah for ten years, and during the markets of ‘Ukaz, Majannah, and the season of Hajj, he would go to the people in the plain of Mina at their dwellings and meet them, and he would say: “Who will give me shelter in his home? Who will help me so that I may convey the message of my Lord, and he will be granted Paradise?” Sometimes a man would come from Yemen or Egypt, and the people of his tribe would come to him and say: “Beware of this young man from Quraysh, lest he mislead you.” When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pass by their tents, they would point at him with their fingers, until Allah raised us up for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from Yathrib, and we gave him shelter and affirmed him. Thus, one of us would go out, believe in the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would teach him the Qur’an. When he returned home, by the blessing of his Islam, his family would also become Muslim, until there was no house of the Ansar left in which there was not a group of Muslims, and all these people would openly declare Islam.

One day, all the people gathered for consultation and said: “How long will we leave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this state, that he is being driven about in the mountains of Makkah and lives in fear?” So, seventy men from among us set out towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and reached him during the days of Hajj. We agreed among ourselves to meet in a valley, and we gathered with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one by one or two by two, until when we were all present, we said: “O Messenger of Allah! On what condition should we pledge allegiance to you?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Pledge allegiance to me on the condition that you will listen and obey in both activity and inactivity, in hardship and ease, and spend in all circumstances, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and that you will not fear the blame of any blamer for speaking the truth, and that you will help me and protect me in the same way you protect yourselves, your wives, and your children. And in return, you will have Paradise.” So we stood up and pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna As‘ad bin Zurara (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the youngest, took the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “O people of Yathrib! Wait. We have come here after enduring hardship with our camels so that we may be certain that he is the Messenger of Allah. (Understand this:) Today, taking the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) away from here means separating yourselves from the entire Arab world, having your best men killed, and facing the sword. If you can be patient upon this, then your reward is with Allah. But if you fear any cowardice in yourselves, then make it clear now, so that it may be an excuse for you before Allah.” Upon this, all the Ansar said: “As‘ad! Move aside. By Allah! We will never abandon this pledge nor end it.” Thus, in this way, we pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pledge from us on the promise and conditions of being granted Paradise.
