Sayyiduna Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that he was with Muslamah bin Abdul Malik in the land of Rome when stolen spoils of war were found among a man's belongings. People asked Sayyiduna Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) about this issue, so he narrated this hadith of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) through his father Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you find stolen spoils of war among a person's belongings, burn those belongings with fire," and perhaps he also said, "Beat that person." So the people took out his belongings and placed them in the market, and among them a Qur'an was also found. The people asked Salim about it, so he said, "Sell it and give its price in charity."
