It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal used to first perform the 'Isha prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then go to his own people and lead them in the same prayer. On one occasion, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the 'Isha prayer. Sayyiduna Mu'adh prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then went to his people and began reciting Surah Al-Baqarah. One man, seeing this, performed his own prayer and left. Later, someone said to him, "You have become a hypocrite." He replied, "I am not a hypocrite." Then he went and mentioned this matter to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Mu'adh prays with you, then comes back and leads us in prayer. We are people who work in the fields and labor with our own hands. He came and led us in prayer and started with Surah Al-Baqarah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him twice, "Mu'adh, do you want to put people to trial? Why do you not recite Surah Al-A'la and Surah Ash-Shams?"
