Hadith 14296

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ ، سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، يَقُولُ وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا : غُلَامٌ ، فَأَسْمَاهُ الْقَاسِمَ ، فَقُلْنَا : لَا نُكَنِّيكَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ، وَلَا نُنْعِمُكَ عَيْنًا ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " أَسْمِ ابْنَكَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a boy was born to one of us, and he named him "Qasim." We said to him, "We will not cool your eyes by giving you the kunyah Abu al-Qasim." Upon this, that person came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned the whole matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, "Name your son Abdur Rahman."
