It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a detachment consisting of three hundred men and appointed Sayyiduna Abu Ubaid bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as their commander. On the way, our provisions ran out. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaid (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered all the people's food in one container and kept giving us from it to eat. We would get only one date per day. A man asked Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu Abdullah! What could you do with one date? He replied: We only realized this when even that one date stopped coming. During this time, we came across a very large fish, like a big mound, which the sea had thrown out. The army ate from it for eighteen days. Then Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) took two of the fish's ribs and set them up, then passed a mount underneath them, and even then it did not touch the rib.
