Hadith 14249

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا غُلَامٌ ، فَسَمَّاهُ الْقَاسِمَ ، فَقُلْنَا : لَا نُكَنِّيكَ بِهِ حَتَّى نَسْأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرْنَا لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " تَسَمَّوْا بِاسْمِي ، وَلَا تَكْتَنُوا بِكُنْيَتِي ، فَإِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ قَاسِمًا بَيْنَكُمْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a child was born to an Ansari, and he named him Qasim. We said to him, "We will not let you keep this kunyah until we ask the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." So we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and asked him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Name yourselves after my name, but do not take my kunyah, because I have been sent among you as the one who distributes."
