It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver sermons while leaning against the trunk of a date-palm tree. An Ansari woman, whose slave was a carpenter, said, "O Messenger of Allah! My slave is a carpenter. Should I not order him to make a pulpit for you so that you may deliver sermons upon it?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Why not?" Thus, the pulpit was prepared, and on Friday, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on it to deliver the sermon, the pillar against which he used to lean began to cry like a child. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that it was crying because the remembrance of Allah had been lost from its presence.
