It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent his maternal uncle, Hazrat Haram (may Allah be pleased with him)—who was the brother of Hazrat Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her)—with those seventy companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who were martyred on the occasion of Bi’r Ma‘unah. My uncle said to his companions, “Stay close to me until I return. If you find me safe, that is very good; otherwise, if they kill me, at least you will be near me, and you can go and inform the rest of the companions.” Saying this, Hazrat Haram (may Allah be pleased with him) set out. Upon reaching the relevant tribe, he said, “Do I have permission to convey the message of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to you?” They granted permission. Hazrat Haram (may Allah be pleased with him) began to deliver the message before them, and the enemies signaled to a man from behind, who came from behind and thrust a spear through him so that it pierced his body. Hazrat Haram (may Allah be pleased with him) fell, saying, “Allahu Akbar! By the Lord of the Ka‘bah, I have succeeded!” Then they martyred all the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), except for the lame man who survived because he had climbed to the top of a mountain. In this context, the following revelation was sent down—“which was recited earlier, but was later abrogated”—that, “Convey this message to our people: We have met our Lord, and He is pleased with us and we are pleased with Him.” Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to invoke curses for forty days against the tribes of Ri‘l, Dhakwān, Banū Lihyān, and ‘Usayyah—“who had disobeyed Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).”
