Abu al-Tufail says that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent a message to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) through a messenger, asking: "Are you the heir of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or are the family of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) his heirs?" He replied: "The family of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are his heirs." Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Then where is the share of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that when Allah gives something to His Prophet, and then calls him back to Himself, its management is in the hands of the one who is the caliph of the time. Therefore, I consider it appropriate to distribute this wealth among the Muslims." After hearing all these details, Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "You know best what you heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Thus, after that, she stopped demanding it.
