Abu Hayyah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I once saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) performing ablution. He first cleaned both his palms, then washed his face three times, and both arms three times, wiped his head, then washed both feet up to the ankles, then stood up and drank the leftover water from the ablution, and said: I wanted to show you the way the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution.
