(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : مُرَّ على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بِجِنَازَةٍ ، فَأَثْنَى الْقَوْمُ خَيْرًا ، فَقَالَ : " وَجَبَتْ " ثُمَّ مُرَّ بِجَنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا ، فَقَالَ : " وَجَبَتْ " فَقَالُوا : قُلْتَ لِهَذَا : " وَجَبَتْ " وَلِهَذَا " وَجَبَتْ " ؟ ! قَالَ : " شَهَادَةُ الْقَوْمِ ، وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a funeral passed by in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Someone praised the deceased, and the people praised him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It has become obligatory." Then another funeral passed by, and the people spoke ill of the deceased. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It has become obligatory." The people asked, "You said 'It has become obligatory' for both; what is the reason for this?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This is the testimony of the people, and the Muslims are Allah's witnesses on earth."
