Sayyiduna Abu Rafi’ says that in the last days of his life, once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting reclining with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), and at that time Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and Sayyiduna Sa’id bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) were also present. He said: “You should know that I have not adopted any opinion regarding kalalah, nor have I nominated anyone as a caliph after me, and that after my death, all the Arab captives will be freed in the way of Allah.” Sayyiduna Sa’id bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “If you would at least advise about any Muslim regarding the caliphate, people would trust you, just as previously Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did, and people trusted him as well.” Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Actually, I see a bad greed among my companions, so I do not do so. However, I place this burden upon those six men with whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased at the time of his death. Choose whomever you wish from among them as caliph.” Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “If even one of these two men were present and I handed over the caliphate to him, I would be satisfied: one is Salim, who was the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifah, and the other is Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah.”
