It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had conquered Khaybar, Hajjaj bin Ghalat (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have some wealth and family in Makkah Mukarramah. I intend to go to them (so that I may bring them here). Do I have your permission to spread any word on your behalf?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission to say whatever he wished. So he reached Makkah Mukarramah and went to his wife and said to her, "Gather together whatever you have and give it to me. I want to buy the spoils of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions, for they have been thoroughly massacred and all their wealth and property has been plundered." This news spread throughout Makkah, the Muslims were devastated, and the polytheists began to celebrate with great joy. Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) also heard this news, so he fell down and did not have the strength to stand. Then he called one of his sons, "Qutham," and, lying on his back, seated him on his chest and began to recite this verse: "My dear son Qutham resembles the one with the fragrant nose, who is the son of those raised in luxury and comfort, even if someone's nose is covered in dust." Then he sent a servant to Hajjaj bin Ghalat (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "Alas! What kind of news have you brought and what are you saying? What Allah has promised is much better than the news you have brought." Hajjaj said to the servant, "Convey my greetings to Abu al-Fadl (Hazrat Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him) and tell him to provide me with an opportunity for privacy in one of his houses so that I may come to him, for the news is such that he will be pleased." When the servant returned and reached the door of the house, he said, "O Abu al-Fadl! Rejoice!" Hearing this, Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) jumped up with joy and kissed him between his eyes. The servant told him what Hajjaj had said, so he set him free. After a short while, Hajjaj came to him and informed him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had conquered Khaybar, had taken the spoils, Allah's prescribed share had been distributed among them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had chosen Safiyyah bint Huyayy for himself and had given her the choice that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would set her free and she would become his wife, or she could return to her family. She preferred that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set her free and she become his wife. But I had come here because of my wealth "which was here" so that I could gather it and take it away. I had sought permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he had given me permission to say whatever I wished. Now you should keep this news hidden for three days, after which, if you deem it appropriate, you may mention it. After that, whatever jewelry and belongings his wife had and whatever she had gathered, she handed it all over to him, and he set off with it. After three days had passed, Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Hajjaj's wife and asked her, "What became of your husband?" She replied, "He left on such-and-such a day," and said, "O Abu al-Fadl! May Allah never disgrace you. Your distress was also very hard on us." He said, "Yes! May Allah never disgrace me, and all praise is due to Allah! What we wanted has happened. Allah has granted victory over Khaybar at the hands of His Prophet, the spoils have been distributed, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has chosen Safiyyah bint Huyayy for himself. Now, if you need your husband, go to him." She said, "By Allah! I consider you truthful." He said, "Whatever I have told you is all true." Then Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) left there and passed by the gatherings of the Quraysh. They said, "Abu al-Fadl! You always receive good." He said, "All praise is due to Allah! I have received good. Hajjaj bin Ghalat informed me that Allah has granted victory over Khaybar at the hands of His Prophet, the spoils have been distributed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has chosen Safiyyah for himself, and Hajjaj had requested me to keep this news hidden for three days. He had only come here to take his wealth and belongings, then he left. Thus, the grief that was upon the Muslims, Allah turned it upon the polytheists, and the Muslims and all those who had become sorrowful in their homes came out of their homes...
