It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Hazrat Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and, after seeking permission, said, “Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you.” Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) replied in a low voice—so low that it did not reach the ears of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted three times, and each time Hazrat Sa’d replied in such a way that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) could not hear. Consequently, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back. Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) ran after him and said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! May my parents be sacrificed for you. Every time you greeted, I heard it with my own ears and replied, but I did not let you hear (I kept my voice low). I wanted to gain as much of your prayer for peace and blessings as possible.” Then he took the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) into his house and presented raisins. After the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate them, he said, “May righteous people continue to eat your food, may the angels of mercy continue to pray for you, and may those who fast break their fast with you.”
