Thabit says that once we were sitting with Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he wrote a letter to his family and said, "O group of reciters! Bear witness to this." I did not like this, so I said, "O Abu Hamza! Would it not be better if you mentioned their names?" He replied, "If I have called you reciters, there is no harm in it. Shall I not tell you about those brothers of mine whom we used to call reciters in the blessed era of the Prophet (peace be upon him)? They were seventy individuals, who, when night fell, would go to their teacher in Madinah Munawwarah and spend the whole night reciting. In the morning, those who had the strength would drink sweet water and go to cut wood. Those who could not afford it would gather together, buy a goat, slaughter and clean it, and in the morning hang it near the chambers of the Prophet (peace be upon him). When Hazrat Khubaib (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent them. They reached a tribe of Banu Sulaim, among them was my maternal uncle 'Haram.' He said to their leader, 'Allow me to go and tell them that we do not wish to harm them, so that they may let us pass.' With permission, he conveyed this message to them. While he was delivering this message, a man came from the front with a spear and pierced him through. When the spear was thrust into his stomach, he fell saying, 'Allahu Akbar, by the Lord of the Ka'bah! I have succeeded.' Then they were attacked, and not a single man among them survived. I have never seen the Prophet (peace be upon him) as grieved over any incident as he was over this one, and I saw that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would raise his hands in the Fajr prayer and supplicate against them. Some time later, Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me, 'Shall I tell you the whereabouts of the killer of Haram?' I said, 'Certainly, tell me, may Allah do such and such to him.' He said, 'Wait, for he has become a Muslim.'"
