It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: "O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet," Hazrat Thabit bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him)—whose voice was naturally loud—said, "My voice is louder than the voice of the Prophet (peace be upon him), so all my deeds have been wasted and I have become a person of Hell." Thinking this, he sat at home in grief. One day, the Prophet (peace be upon him) inquired about his absence, so some people went to him and said, "The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asking about your absence. What is the matter?" He replied, "I am the one whose voice is louder than the voice of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and when I speak, I speak loudly. Therefore, all my deeds have been wasted and I have become a person of Hell." The people conveyed this to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "No, rather he is of the people of Paradise." Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he used to walk among us and we were certain that he was of the people of Paradise. On the day of the Battle of Yamama, some disorder occurred in our ranks, so Hazrat Thabit bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) came; at that time, he had applied perfume to his body and was wearing a shroud, and he said, "You have returned badly to your companions." Saying this, he advanced so far while fighting that he was eventually martyred.
