It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Hazrat Baseesah (may Allah be pleased with her) as a spy to bring news of Abu Sufyan’s army. When she returned, there was no one in the house except me and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went outside and spoke to the people about this matter and said: “We are setting out in search of the caravan; whoever has a mount should go with us.” Some people asked for permission to go to the upper part of Madinah to bring their mounts, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No, whoever has a mount should go (we will not wait).” Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with his companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and reached the wells of Badr before the polytheists. Upon arrival, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “None of you should advance towards anything without my permission.” When the polytheists drew near, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Rush towards the Paradise whose width is equal to the heavens and the earth.” Hearing this, Umair bin Humaam Ansari said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is Paradise’s width equal to the heavens and the earth?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Yes!” Upon this, he said: “Wonderful! Wonderful!” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “What makes you say ‘Wonderful! Wonderful!’?” He replied: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! By Allah, it is only in the hope that I may become one of its people.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You are among the people of Paradise.” Then Umair took out some dates from his quiver and began to eat them. Suddenly, he thought to himself: “If I remain alive until I finish eating these dates, that would be a long life.” So he threw the dates aside, plunged into the battlefield, and fought so much that he was finally martyred.
