It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who will go and see what has become of Abu Jahl?" Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) went for this service. He saw that the two sons of Afraa had struck him until he was lifeless. Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) caught Abu Jahl by his beard and said, "Are you Abu Jahl?" He replied, "Have you ever killed a man greater than me?"
