Hadith 12247

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Hazrat Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) used to lead his people in prayer. Once, while he was leading the prayer, Hazrat Haram (may Allah be pleased with him), who was on his way to water his garden, entered the mosque to offer prayer. When he saw that Hazrat Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) was prolonging the prayer, he shortened his own prayer and went to water his garden. Hazrat Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) uttered that he is a hypocrite, as he hastens from prayer to water his garden. Coincidentally, Hazrat Haram (may Allah be pleased with him) presented himself in the court of the Prophet, and Hazrat Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present there. Hazrat Haram (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! I was going to water my garden, I entered the mosque to offer congregational prayer, but when he prolonged the prayer, I shortened my prayer and went to water my garden. Now he thinks that I am a hypocrite." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards Hazrat Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) and said twice, "Do you put people to trial? Do not lead them in long prayers; recite Surah Al-A'la and Surah Ash-Shams and similar surahs."
