It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the place of Masjid Nabawi (peace be upon him) originally belonged to Banu Najjar; there used to be a tree, a field, and some graves of polytheists. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Banu Najjar, "Settle its price with me." They replied, "We will not take its price." Thus, by the order of the Prophet (peace be upon him), the trees were cut down, the field was cleared, and the graves were dug up. And before the construction of Masjid Nabawi, whenever the time for prayer came, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would pray wherever he was, and he would also pray in the sheep pens.
