(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، وَابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلَ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالُوا : إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَيْنَا ، فَكَيْفَ نَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ ؟ ، قَالَ : فَقُولُوا : وَعَلَيْكُمْ " ، وَحَجَّاجٌ مِثْلَهُ ، قَالَ شُعْبَةُ : لَمْ أَسْأَلْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ هَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ أَنَسٍ ؟ .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue: The People of the Book greet us with Salam, what should we reply to them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Just say "Wa Alaikum" in response.
