It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people from the tribes of Ri'l, Dhakwan, 'Usayyah, and Banu Lihyan came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and claimed that they had accepted Islam and requested the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for support against their people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent seventy Ansari companions (may Allah be pleased with them) with them for assistance. Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that we used to call them "Qurra" (reciters). These people used to cut wood during the day and spend the night in prayer. They set out with all these companions, and when they reached "Bi'r Ma'unah" on the way, they deceived the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and martyred them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this, he recited Qunoot Nazilah in the Fajr prayer for a month and continued to invoke curses upon the tribes of Ri'l, Dhakwan, 'Usayyah, and Banu Lihyan. Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the words of these companions (may Allah be pleased with them), "Convey this message from us to our people that we have met our Lord, and He is pleased with us and we are pleased with Him," used to be recited in the Holy Qur'an for a period, but later their recitation was abrogated.
