It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that among the captives of the Battle of Autas, women were given to us as spoils of war. Those women had husbands, and we did not feel it was good to have relations with them while their husbands were alive. So we asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter, and then this verse was revealed: "And married women are forbidden to you, except those whom your right hands possess." Thus, we considered them lawful for ourselves.
