Hadith 1146

Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that once Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with them both) met together at the place of Usfan. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prohibit Hajj Tamattu’. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, “What is your purpose in prohibiting something which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself did?” Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, “Let this matter be.” (Because I have not given a ruling on it, I have only mentioned it as advice.)
