Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I narrate to you only what I have heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); this too my ears have heard and my heart has preserved, that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Among the Children of Israel there was a man who had killed ninety-nine people. After that, (with the intention of repenting) he set out to find out who was the greatest scholar on the face of the earth. People told him that a certain person was the greatest scholar. He went to that person and asked, "I have killed ninety-nine people, can my repentance be accepted?" The scholar said, "No." So he killed the scholar as well, thus completing the number to one hundred. Then he began to ask people who was now the greatest scholar. People gave him the address of a man; he went to him and stated his case. The scholar said, "Yes, what is there to prevent it? Leave this evil land and go to such-and-such village (there your repentance will be accepted) and worship your Lord there." This man set out towards that village, but on the way, the time of his death came. Compelled, he kept dragging himself on his chest towards that village. Now the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed with each other regarding his salvation and punishment. Satan came and said, "I have more right to him because he never disobeyed me even for a moment." And the angels of mercy said, "He set out in repentance." (Allah Almighty sent an angel and) he decided that whichever of the two villages this man was closer to, count him among its people. The narrator says that before his death, seeing his end near, he had come closer to the good village, so the angels counted him among them.
