Hadith 10013

حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ , وَمِسْعَرٍ , عَنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ الْجُمَحِيِّ ، قََالَ : سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، وَقَالَ مِسْعَرٌ : أَظُنُّهُ عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، عَنِ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ , قََالَ : مَرُّوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِجِنَازَةٍ ، فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا ، فَقَالَ : " وَجَبَت " ، ثُمَّ مَرُّوا عَلَيْهِ بِجِنَازَةٍ ، فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا ، فَقَالَ : " وَجَبَت " ، فَقَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا وَجَبَتْ ؟ قَالَ : " بَعْضُكُمْ شُهَدَاءُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a funeral passed by in front of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). People began to mention the good qualities and praise of the deceased. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It has become obligatory." In the meantime, another funeral passed by and people mentioned the bad qualities and condemnation of the deceased. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It has become obligatory." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is meant by 'it has become obligatory'?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You are Allah's witnesses on the earth."
