Humaid narrated from his father Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set out towards the land of Sham with the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them). When he reached the place of Sargh, Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) and the people of Sham met him and said to him, "O Commander of the Faithful! (In Sham) disease has spread, and with you are the people of precedence (those who migrated early) and other companions (may Allah be pleased with them). If they perish in this disease, there will be none like them among the people." Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "O Commander of the Faithful! Will you flee from death? Our trust and destiny is that we will only be afflicted with what Allah has written for us." So he said, "Call the early Muhajireen to me." So the people called them, and he said, "Advise me." A group among them said, "O Commander of the Faithful! With you are the people of precedence (those who migrated early), the people of knowledge, and the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). If they are afflicted by this disease, there are no believers like them among the people." Another group said, "O Commander of the Faithful! Will you flee from death? We trust in the decree of Allah. We will only be afflicted with what Allah has written in our destiny." The one who opposed the most was Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said, "Call the Ansar to me." So they were called, and he said, "Advise me." They also spoke similarly to their Muhajir brothers and differed among themselves. He said, "Call the Muhajireen of the conquest of Makkah to me, the elders and old men of Quraysh." (The narrator said:) They were called, and he said, "Advise me." (The narrator said:) Two of them did not differ; they said, "Our forefathers used to say that they too were afflicted with this calamity." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "The people will go by land routes and will not know where they are heading." (The narrator said:) Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived and said, "O Commander of the Faithful! I have a hadith regarding this matter: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When you hear of a disease in a land, do not enter it, and when it spreads in a land, do not flee from it.'" (The narrator said:) So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back with the people.
