Hadith 9

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived in Madinah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established a bond of brotherhood between him and Sa’d bin Rabi’ al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Sa’d al-Ansari said to him: O my brother! I am among the wealthiest of the people of Madinah. Take half of my wealth, and I have two wives; whichever one you like more, I will divorce her for you (and after she completes her waiting period, you may marry her). Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: May Allah bless your family and your wealth, just show me the way to the market. So he showed him the way to the market. He went to the market, engaged in buying and selling, and brought back some cheese and ghee as earnings. In this way, he continued to work as much as Allah willed. (Once) he came and there were signs of marriage on him, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: “What is this?” He replied: O Messenger of Allah! I have married a woman. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “How much dowry did you give her?” He said: Gold equal to the weight of a date stone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Give a wedding feast, even if it is only with one goat.” Then Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After that, you saw me; if I lifted a stone, I would think that I would find gold and silver beneath it.
