Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Madinah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established a bond of brotherhood between him and Sa’d bin Rabi’ al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) had two wives, and he offered to divide his wealth and household (i.e., one wife and half of his wealth) with him. So, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May Allah bless you in your family and wealth, just show me the way to the market. The next day, he went to the market and earned some profit in cheese and ghee. Then one day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him and there were traces of wedding perfume on him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “O Abdur Rahman, what is the matter?” He replied: O Messenger of Allah! I have married a woman from among the Ansar. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “How much dowry did you give her?” He replied: Gold equal to the weight of a date stone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Give a wedding feast, even if it is with only one goat.”
