Hadith 49

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا، مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ قَالَ: كَانَ كَعْبُ الْأَحْبَارُ يَقُصُّ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ: «لَا يَقُصُّ إِلَّا مَأْمُورٌ أَوْ مُرَاءٍ» ، قَالَ: فَأَتَى كَعْبٌ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ، هَذَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، يَقُولُ: كَذَا وَكَذَا فَتَرَكَ الْقَصَصَ، ثُمَّ إِنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ أَمَرَهُ بِالْقَصَصِ، فَاسْتَحَلَّ ذَاكَ بِذَاكَ.
Ka'b al-Ahbar used to narrate stories. Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Stories are either narrated by one who is commanded to do so, or by one who does it for show." He (i.e., the narrator) said: Ka'b came and it was said to him, "May your mother lose you, Abdur Rahman bin Awf is saying such and such." After that, he abandoned the act of narrating stories. Then Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) commanded him, so due to this he considered (narrating stories) permissible.
