It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that he stated: We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when a traveler came and sat down before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with his knees close to his. Then he asked: What is Islam? He replied: “To bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, to perform the five prayers, to fast in the month of Ramadan, to pay zakat, and to perform Hajj to the House of Allah.” He asked: If I do all this, am I a Muslim? He replied: “Yes.” He said: You have spoken the truth. He then asked: What is faith (iman)? He replied: “To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, and to believe in the Last Day, resurrection, reckoning, Paradise, Hell, and destiny.” He asked: If I do this, am I a believer? He replied: “Yes.” He said: You have spoken the truth. He then asked: What is excellence (ihsan)? He replied: “To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then (know that) He surely sees you.” He asked: If I do so, am I a doer of good (muhsin)? He replied: “Yes.” He then asked: When will the Hour (Day of Judgment) come? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the one being questioned knows no more about it than the questioner.” He asked: What are its signs? He replied: “When the barefoot, naked people begin to boast over one another.” He asked: The homeless people? He replied: Yes. Then the traveler left, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Call that man back.” We went outside and saw no one. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, smiled, then said: “That was Jibreel who came to teach you your religion. In this form, he had never come before.”
