It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in residence and on journey. In residence, when he performed the Zuhr prayer, he would pray four rak‘ahs (obligatory) and then two rak‘ahs after them. And when he performed the Asr prayer, he would pray (only) four rak‘ahs (obligatory) and would not pray anything after them. And when he performed the Maghrib prayer, he would pray three rak‘ahs (obligatory) and then two rak‘ahs after them. And when he performed the ‘Isha prayer, he would perform four rak‘ahs (obligatory) and then two rak‘ahs after them. And I accompanied him on journey, so when he performed the Zuhr prayer, he would pray two rak‘ahs (obligatory) and then (also) two rak‘ahs after them. And when he performed the Asr prayer, he would pray (only) two rak‘ahs and would not pray anything after them. And when he performed the Maghrib prayer, he would pray three rak‘ahs (obligatory) and then two rak‘ahs after them. And he said: “This (Maghrib prayer) is the witr of the day with which the day ends and the night begins.” And when he performed the ‘Isha prayer, he would pray two rak‘ahs and then (also) two rak‘ahs after them.
