Abdullah bin Ashtar says: By Allah! I was with Abdullah bin Muti’ when he, along with Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), attacked Yazid bin Muawiyah. At that time, Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to them. He asked for a cushion, which was presented to him, but he said: I have not come to sit with you, rather I intended to narrate to you a hadith which I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Whoever abandons obedience (to the ruler) will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection without having any proof (for his salvation), and whoever dies without having pledged allegiance (to a ruler) dies the death of ignorance.” Then (Abdullah bin Umar) returned.
