Hadith 86
حَدَّثَنَا جَدِّيْ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَبَّانُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللّٰهِ، عَنْ سَیْفِ بْنِ أَبِيْ سُلَیْمَانَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَدِيَّ بْنَ عَدِيٍّ الْکِنْدِيَّ یَقُوْلُ: حَدَّثَنَا مَوْلَي لَنَا أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَدِّيْ یَقُوْلُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللّٰهِ صلَّی اللهُ عَلَیْهِ وَسَلَّمَ یَقُوْلُ: ((إِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا یُعَذِّبُ الْعَامَّةَ بِعَمَل الْخَاصَّةِ حَتَّی یَرَوْا الْمُنْکَرَ بَیْنَ ظَهْرَانِیْهِمْ وَهُمْ قَادِرُوْنَ عَلَی أَنْ یُنْکِرُوْہُ فَلا یُنْکِرُوْهُ فَإِذَا فَعَلُوْا ذٰلِكَ عَذَّبَ اللّٰهُ الْعَامَّةَ بِالْخَاصَّةِ))
Adi bin Adi Kindi narrates that one of our freed slaves told us that he heard my grandfather say that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "Indeed, Allah does not punish the common people because of the (evil deeds of) the elite, until they see evil among themselves and have the power to stop it, but do not stop it. When they do so, Allah afflicts the common people with punishment because of the elite."
