Aseer bin Jaber said that we used to sit with one of our hadith scholars in Kufa. When people dispersed, a few men would remain, among them was a man who would not listen to anyone, he would only speak his own words, so I liked him and his love became rooted in my heart. I was like this when suddenly I found him missing, so I asked my companions: There was a man who used to sit with us, does anyone among you know him? They said: Yes, he is Owais Qarni. I said: Can you tell me where his house is? They said: Yes. I went with him until we reached his room and knocked on the door. He came out, so I said: O brother! What has prevented you from coming to us? He said: Nakedness, I have nothing (no clothing) in which I can come to you, I have only one sheet. I said: Then wear this sheet. He said: Do not do so, indeed if I wear this sheet, they will harm me. So I kept insisting with him until he wore it. He came out to them, so they said: Has he deceived someone with his sheet? He came and took it off. I came to them and said: What do you intend towards this man, surely you have harmed him, he wears clothes once and takes them off the next time? I rebuked them harshly with my tongue. Among his companions was a man who used to mock him. The delegation of the people of Kufa came to Sayyidina Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and that man also came with the delegation. Sayyidina Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Is there anyone here from the people of Qarn? That man came forward. Sayyidina Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The matter is that a man from the people of Yemen will come to you who will be called Owais Qarni, he will leave no one in Yemen except his mother, he will have leprosy, he will pray to Allah, and Allah will remove it from him except for a spot the size of a dinar or dirham. Whoever among you meets him, let him request him to seek forgiveness for him." (Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said:) He came to us here, I said: Who are you? He said: Owais. I said: Whom did you leave behind in Yemen? He said: My mother. I said: Did you have leprosy, and you prayed to Allah and He removed it from you except for a spot the size of a dinar or dirham? He said: Yes. I said: Pray for forgiveness for me. He said: O Commander of the Faithful! Should someone like me pray for forgiveness for someone like you? I said: You are my brother, you cannot be separated from me. He quickly left me, and I was informed that he came to you in Kufa. That man began to belittle what Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said about him and said: That person is not from among us, nor do we know him. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why not, indeed he is such and such a man, and he began to describe his qualities. He said: That man is among us, he is mocked, he is called Owais. He said: That is him, you have found him, and I did not think you would be able to find him. That man came and before going home, he came to him. Owais said: This is not your habit, what has appeared to you? He said: I swear by Allah! I met Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and he said such and such things, pray for forgiveness for me. He said: I will never pray for forgiveness for you until you make it obligatory upon yourself that you will not mock me, and you will not mention to anyone what you heard from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: This is my promise to you. He prayed for forgiveness for him. Aseer said: Only a little time had passed when his story spread in Kufa. I stayed with him and said: O my brother! I do not think that you are afflicted with self-admiration, and we absolutely did not care about it. He said: There is nothing in it that I should go around telling people, every servant will only get the reward of his deeds. When the matter spread, he ran away and left.
