أنا مَعْمَرٌ، أنا الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ السَّعْدِيِّ، قَالَ : قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ : أَلَمْ أُحَدِّثْ أَنَّكَ تَلِي مِنْ أَعْمَالِ النَّاسِ أَعْمَالا، فَإِذَا أُعْطِيتَ الْعَمَالَةَ لَمْ تَقْبَلْهَا ؟ فَقَالَ : أَجَلْ، قَالَ : مَا تُرِيدُ إِلَى ذَلِكَ ؟ قَالَ : أَنَا غَنِيٌّ، لِي أَفْرَاسٌ، وَلِي أَعْبُدٌ، وَأُرِيدُ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَمَلِي صَدَقَةً عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ، قَالَ عُمَرُ : لا تَفْعَلْ، فَإِنِّي قَدْ كُنْتُ أَفْعَلُ مَا تَفْعَلُ، فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَعْطَانِي الْعَطَاءَ، قُلْتُ : أَعْطِهِ مَنْ هُوَ أَفْقَرُ مِنِّي، حَتَّى أَعْطَانِي مَرَّةً مَالا، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَعْطِهِ مَنْ هُوَ أَفْقَرُ إِلَيْهِ مِنِّي، فَقَالَ : " خُذْهُ فَإِمَّا تَمَوَّلُهُ وَإِمَّا تَصَدَّقُ بِهِ، وَمَا جَاءَكَ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ وَأَنْتَ لَهُ غَيْرُ مُشْرِفٍ، وَلا سَائِلٍ فَخُذْهُ، وَإِلا فَلا تُتْبِعْهُ نَفْسَكَ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sa'di (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Has it not been reported to me that you (as a governor) perform many tasks for the people, and then when you are given wages, you do not accept them?" He said, "Yes." Umar asked, "What is your intention in this?" He replied, "I am wealthy, I have horses and many slaves, and I intend that my work be charity for the Muslims." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do not do so. Indeed, I used to do the same as you are doing, but when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me wages, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, give this to someone who is more in need of it than me.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Take it, either make it your wealth or give it in charity. And whatever comes to you from this wealth, and you are neither greedy for it nor asking for it, then take it. And whatever is not like that, do not let your soul pursue it.'"
