Usayd bin Mutashams bin Muawiyah narrates that we fought the battle of Isfahan with Abu Musa (Ash’ari) (may Allah be pleased with him). Shortly after, he conquered it, then after some time he returned and we also returned with him. We camped at a place and Aqil was a neighbor there. (Abu Musa Ash’ari, may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Who will take down his pillow?” So I stood up towards him and took it down. He said, “Shall I not narrate to you the hadith which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to narrate to us?” We said, “Why not, may Allah have mercy on you.” He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us: ‘Indeed, before the Day of Judgment there will be ‘Harj’.’ We asked, ‘What is ‘Harj’?’ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Killing and bloodshed.’ We said, ‘Every year most of the disbelievers are killed. Indeed, in a year we kill so many disbelievers.’ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘No, by Allah! Your killing of the disbelievers is not that ‘Harj’, rather it is the killing which will be reconciliation (meaning among the people of Islam), O group of Muslims! Until a man will kill his neighbor, his cousin, his brother, and his father.’ He said, ‘We were astonished and dumbfounded, so much so that no one was even opening his eyes. Some of us looked at others and we said: How will a man kill his brother, his cousin, and his father, because of the love and affection which Allah has placed in our hearts on that day? And we know that our companion has not lied to us.’ We said, ‘What do you think, will the intellects we have today be with us on that day?’ He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘No, by Allah! (Satan) will cause discord in their intellects just as he will in the people of that time, and the people will be responsible for that. We will think that indeed they are upon something, but they will not be upon anything.’ And by Allah! Indeed, I fear that (time) will reach me and especially you, and by Allah! If that (time) reaches me and especially you, I will not find any way out for myself and for you, in that matter regarding which our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a covenant from us. Yes, one can come out of it in the same way as he entered it.” Hasan said: That is, in a state of reconciliation.
